  18. <p>     They seemed like a jolly pair, did manager Don Zimmer of
  19. the Chicago Cubs and Motoshi Fujita, manager of the Yomiuri
  20. Giants, as they embraced at an all-star game between the
  21. Americans and the Japanese in Tokyo. But the smiles soon
  22. vanished as the Japanese team rolled over the Major League team
  23. last week with a hefty four-game lead in the eight-match series.
  24. The American squad, which included Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart
  25. and Detroit home-run king Cecil Fielder, pleaded jet lag before
  26. they finally notched a 10-5 win in the fifth game and a 6-6 tie
  27. in the sixth. The puzzled Japanese at first thought the
  28. Americans were toying with them, but manager Zimmer gives credit
  29. due: "We are playing as hard as we can, but the Japanese teams
  30. have gotten much stronger." Will baseball go the way of the
  31. transistor?
